No 1 – It sucks – get over it!
I don’t want to confuse you or leave you in any doubt, however, the reality is that most LinkedIn profiles are naff! Please don’t get stroppy with me for saying this, it is just a fact! The problem is that either your profile is a carbon copy of everybody else’s, it’s just lacking the ‘Wow’ factor, or you’re just not showing that you have the solution to a problem.
I’ll give you an example, I’ve just hired a cleaner (my house was so messy that it was starting to cause arguments with my other half – problem!), I needed to fix the problem and we didn’t want to spend a weekend sorting it out (time was another issue!). In the same way, this can be applied to job searching and your LinkedIn profile i.e. a company ONLY hires someone because they have a problem that they need fixing.

No 2 – You’re doing the hard slog aren’t you?
I call this the one-way funnel because you’re probably just applying for loads of jobs wherever you can. You follow up with the recruiters and you chase them down because you know how to apply for jobs online, on LinkedIn, or job sites – right? However, this is a CV/Resume strategy, can I say loud and clear that this is not a job search strategy!!!
In order to create a two-way funnel, you need to get job offers coming to you. You need to be attractive enough that companies are seeking YOU out, not just the other way around! LinkedIn is a fab tool for doing this and attracting attention to yourself – well, you’re reading this right now aren’t you?
But posting to LinkedIn is not enough, so if you think that’s all you need to do…
Think again!
No 3 – It’s more than a makeover!
If you think that once you’ve tweaked your LinkedIn profile you will suddenly start getting found as if by magic – then I will just say that there is no such thing as a free lunch. If you think that you’re suddenly going to be drowning in job offers in your inbox, then I’m afraid you may be a little disappointed.
You see, you’ve got to first have a great profile (this is the bait – a bit like fishing) but you also need to utilise the huge great database that IS LinkedIn. In order to take advantage of all that LinkedIn has to offer, you need to make the most of the company and recruitment searches as well as your existing and potential connections.
