You know you want to move on but the act of actually STARTING and DOING is the hardest bit…

If you have great intentions but those intentions never seem to see the light of day, let’s have a chat it may just be that you’re feeling clueless about where to even begin.

Or maybe you have begun, but it’s not a cohesive plan, you keep stopping and starting with no end goal, and let’s face it, it’s starting to get you down.

You’re not alone. However, you do need to make a decision about what you want. Remember that by not doing something you are unconsciously deciding to stay where you are. So, regardless of which action you take, you are actually making a decision!

The only thing in life that you have no real choice about is taxes and death (not very motivating), but what is motivating is that you and only YOU are in control of what you do or don’t do each day and where you end up.

So how do you overcome procrastination? Well, firstly you need to define it – according to Wikipedia…

Procrastination is the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time, sometimes to the “last minute” before a deadline.

So if you understand this, you can resolve it… it’s kind of like dieting – you can read every book on how to diet, read about celebrities dieting dilemmas (if that is your thing!), but this won’t actually help you lose weight! You have to DO the real work, which is exercise and eating less. The art of reading book after book won’t get you far…you will still be overweight!

YOU just need to CHOOSE.

So let’s make this simple for you.  You need to choose to move forward and not to stay still and you do this by taking action. Don’t worry it does not need to be a massive amount of action, but it does need to be consistent. I understand you have a life and you may already have a job, but small consistent changes can and do make huge differences.

Here are some examples of what you could do:

  • Refresh your CV
  • Update your LinkedIn profile
  • Ask for and gain recommendations from people within your industry
  • Network online in groups
  • Attend that networking meeting

You kill procrastination, by being aware that you’re suffering with it and taking some action, no matter how small.
 
You kill procrastination by realising that you can control it.
